NOTES
In this print, Rembrandt van Rijn illustrates the last stage of the narrative of Christ's burial. Having been lowered from the cross, the body is laid to rest in a tomb surrounded by mourners. As the viewer's eye slowly adjusts to the darkness, the mystery of the scene unfolds. Christ's shadowed face contrasts with the light emitted by his body, which has begun to illuminate those around him, including the mourning Virgin Mary at his feet.
