Join us in preserving art for the future—please do not touch the works of art.

The works of art on display in the museum are unique, fragile, and irreplaceable. To help us preserve this work for future generations, please avoid touching or leaning against the artwork, walls, or exhibits.

Group Visits

The Museum offers docent-led tours and self-guided group visits for groups of 10 or more to explore the collection and exhibitions. For more information, visit slam.org/group-visits.

Visiting with Children

The Museum loans strollers free of charge. Child carriers can be worn only on the front or checked at a coat check. Wagons are not allowed in the Museum.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The accompanying adult is responsible for maintaining control of their children at all times.

Coat Check

The Museum offers visitors coat check areas in Taylor Hall and Sculpture Hall. At this time, we encourage you to leave backpacks and bags larger than 11 x 17 inches at home.

Food and Drink

Food and drink are not allowed in the galleries. Eating and drinking is permitted at the Museum’s restaurant and cafe, as well as in the Grace Taylor Broughton Sculpture Garden and on Blanke Sculpture Terrace.

Photography and Video Recordings

Commercial photography and professional portrait photography and videography are not permitted unless you are renting the space for a private event. Small groups looking to take a quick snapshot are encouraged to visit Sculpture Hall, the Grace Taylor Broughton Sculpture Garden, or the South Terrace.

Photos or video recordings using a cellphone or other small personal camera are allowed in the museum, provided there is no disruption to museum operations or guest accessibility. Flash photography, monopods, tripods, and selfie sticks are not permitted.

The art can be photographed for personal, non-commercial use, except where noted in an instance where the owner of a loaned work forbids it.

Many of the works on view are under copyright, which may restrict what you can do with photos or videos of the works.

We request members of the media reach out to the press office before photographing or recording video in the museum.

Sketching in the Galleries

Museum visitors are welcome to sketch in the permanent collection galleries using dry media without easels during regular open hours; sketching is not allowed in the Main Exhibition Galleries.

Painters and copyists using easels and/or working in wet media and sculptors working in water-soluble clay or polymer clay, etc., require prior approval.

Visitor Safety

  • Shoes and shirts are required.
  • Animals, with the exception of service animals, are not allowed in the Museum.
  • The entire Museum campus is smoke-free. This includes vapor and e-cigarettes.
  • Weapons are not permitted in the Museum.
